Feeling Lucky? Best Bets to Play in Roulette
Roulette is one of the most popular games you can play at a casino. Despite what seems like a simple game at first glance, there’s plenty of depth in roulette for those who want to develop an expert strategy. The most important thing is to be careful about the bets you place and to understand the odds. Take a closer look at your options when playing roulette.
Worst Odds: Straight Bet
A straight bet or single bet is made by placing chips on the one number you think the roulette ball will land on. The odds depend on whether you play American or European roulette, since the American version has an extra pocket — and thus one more number to bet on.
The odds for winning a straight bet in European roulette are 2.7 per cent. The odds in American roulette are 2.6 per cent. This makes a straight bet the hardest type of wager to win. However, this is the best play you can make if you want the highest win possible. In American and European roulette, a straight bet pays out at 35 to 1.
Best Odds: Outside Bets
The best odds you can place are on the pockets outside the red and black checkered numbers on the table — hence the name “outside bets.” You’ll see pockets for even or odd bets, red or black bets, and high or low bets. With these wagers, you’re betting whether the ball will stop on a red or black pocket, an even or odd number, or a number from 1-18 or 9-36.
Since the zero and double zero aren’t included in this type of bet, the odds are slightly less than 50 per cent. You’ve got a 48.6 per cent chance of guessing correctly in European roulette and a 47.4 per cent chance of guessing correctly in American roulette. Both versions pay out at 1-1 if you win these types of outside bets.
Column and Dozen Bets
Column and dozen bets each cover a range of 12 numbers. Therefore, again excluding the zero and double zero pockets, your odds of winning are 32.4 per cent and 31.6 per cent for European and American roulette, respectively. If you pick the correct number range, you’ll get a 2-1 payout.
Other Bets, Odds, and Wagers
Players can make bets that cover a variety of number combinations. For example, a split bet — where you place chips on the line where two numbers meet — pays out at 17-1 and has odds of 5.4 and 5.3 per cent for European and American roulette, respectively. You can also place bets on three numbers (a street bet), four numbers (a corner bet), or six numbers (a double street bet).
In American roulette, you can also make a basket bet. This covers five numbers: one, two, three, and the zero and double zero. You’ve got a 13.2 per cent chance of winning. The payout is 6-1.
You can play roulette conservatively or aggressively by making easy- or hard-to-win bets. However, some advanced players place low- and high-risk wagers during the same spin or place even-odd and red-black wagers on the same spin. These strategies give players many options when it comes to betting on roulette.
