COVID-19 sees land-based poker tournaments go online

As all of us slowly become experts at everything social-distancing, global gambling events naturally follow.

This becomes clear as Unibet recently announced that they are moving their poker tournaments online, creating a perfect poker opportunity for hungry online casino players in India!

Unibet, the sports betting-focused gaming platform from Kindred Group, has decided to take precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their precautions include moving their land-based poker tournament Unibet Open, online. The tournament was supposed to take place in Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia.

Instead, the decision was taken to combine the Unibet Open Tallinn event with the 8th edition of the Unibet Online Series.

The massive May Unibet poker tournament

So, what does this move mean exactly? Well, first of all, it means that anyone can participate in a real, huge poker tournament.

Yes, even you!

The series started on the 1st of May and will run to the 24th of May when the Unibet Open Main Event will be played.

And just so that you get what’s up for grabs, the series has a €1 million (₹8.2 crore) guarantee!

During these dates, a total of 132 real money events will be played, leading up to the €1,100 buy-in Main Event.

Head of Events at Unibet, Nataly Sopacuaperu, said:

This is not a decision we have taken lightly; we fully understand the impact to our partners and the land-based venues, however, as a priority, we must consider not only the health of our customers but also the difficulty for recreational players with regards to planning trips around uncertainty.

Online events are more accessible for Indian players

The decision works out in our favor. We don’t have to spend our hard-earned rupees on flights and accommodation to Estonia from India.

Also, let’s face it, even if we were able to get hold of flight tickets, the current situation does not guarantee that the flights would go as planned.

Being able to enjoy these events from the comfort of our own home here in India is undoubtedly a lot safer, less stressful, and also cheaper!

We can use the money for buy-ins, and re-buys instead!

Kristoffer Bergvall, who is the Head of Poker at Unibet, added to Nataly’s comment that:

We know some people will be disappointed, the team here certainly is, we love the live events! That said, we are all in agreement that this is the best way to ensure the consistency and reliability that people have come to expect from our product, and the online room is better equipped than ever to house our land-based fans.

Sharpen your poker-skills

Are you new to poker? Not all online casinos have poker clients or poker rooms where you can play regular Texas Hold’em or Omaha.

But there are other ways for you to learn the ropes of this classic card game. Live Casino Hold’em is a great alternative, where you play against a dealer, available at most Indian casinos online!
