Basic Craps Rules

Craps is a diverse game, and playing it online is easy:

  1. Place a Pass bet.
  2. (optional) Place additional side-bets.
  3. Let your bets play until you hit the Point, or a 7.

Craps table rules

In this game, you are placing bets on a specific outcome rather than playing against a dealer.

When learning how to play Craps, it’s easiest to follow the most popular bet type, the Pass Line bet.

The Pass Line bet pays if the dice rolls a 7 or 11. It will lose on a 2, 3, or 12. Rolling a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, is called a Point. This determines which number you need to hit to win on your Pass Line bet.

Once the Point has been determined, you will not want to roll a 7, as that means you’ll lose your bet.

You can enjoy the game of Craps by using the Pass Line bet alone. Just place it and wait for the outcome!

The Craps table

Out of all casino table games, the Craps table might be the most intimidating looking one.

But don’t worry, it’s easier than you think. First of all, you only need to look at the left or the right side of the table, as the bets are identical on both sides. (To make it easier for players standing around the table to place bets.)

On the top of the table, closest to the dealer, you’ll find the Place bets. In the middle, you have the Come bet and Field bet.

Underneath those, closest to the player, you have the Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line bets.

You’ll find the Hardline bets in the center of the table, which works similarly to side-bets in blackjack.

Craps Terminology

Something that Craps is famous for is the language. Not only are all craps bets fairly different from other table games, but even the “lingo” used by players at a Craps table is unique.

Thankfully for us, playing Craps online will not require us to learn to “speak” Craps!

But there are still words that you’ll want to know to understand Craps rules better:

Pass Line – The bet placed on a “come out roll.” The Pass Line wins on a 7 or 11. It loses on a 2, 3, or 12. Any other number is aPoint, which moves the game to the next step.

Don’t Pass – Works like a Pass Line bet, but will lose on 7 or 11 and win on a 2, 3, or 12. After the “come out roll,” the Don’t Pass bet will win on a 7, but lose on the point.

Come out roll – The “come out roll” is the first type of roll made, where the Point is established. You’ll play the “come out roll” until the dice roll a Point or a losing number.

Marker – A physical marker on the table. It looks like a puck; one side is black with the word “OFF,” the other is white, with the word “ON.” When the Marker is “off,” it’s a “come out roll;” if it’s “on,” it will be placed above the Point number, indicating that the Point is in play.

Point – The come out roll determines the Point. The Point can be a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10.

Odds – Can be placed once the Point is established. This bet has zero house edge, and the Pass Line bet determines its allowed size.

Place bet – You can place Place bets on remaining numbers once the Point has been established.

Field bet – A combination-type bet that covers some Place numbers, and numbers otherwise not covered by the Point or Place bets. The Field bet pays double on a 2 and 12 and covers 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11.

Come bet – If you missed the come out roll, you could place a Come bet. The next roll will count as a come out roll for that bet, and will therefore move your bet to whichever number is “your” Point.

Don’t Come bet – Works like the Don’t Pass bet. You can placed it any time the marker shows “ON.”

Crap – Another word for numbers two, three, and twelve.

“Seven out” – Expression used by the dealer on a seven roll after the come out roll.

Hardline bet – You’ll find Hardline bets in the center of the table. Hardline bets rely on the dice rolling two identical numbers, like two 2’s or two 6’s. Some bets stay active until they win or the round ends, while others are placed for the upcoming roll.

The rules of craps dealers

In online casino Craps, you’ll have one dealer at the table. The dealer will be responsible for collecting the dice, loading the throwing arm, and placing the marker.

Since the dealer in Craps only assists the game, much like a roulette dealer, there are no specific rules they have to adhere to. They simply follow the Craps rules as the game progresses.

Fun fact:
Craps at a brick-and-mortar casino can sometimes have up to four dealers simultaneously at a table!

The rules of the player

You can relax when playing online Craps; there are no specific rules that you need to follow yourself.

All your bets are digital when playing Craps online. In other words, you don’t have to worry about placing them correctly on the table or call them out.

You won’t even have to worry about throwing the dice! In the online casino version of the game, a mechanical arm throws them.

How to get the best winning chances in craps

The best way to increase your winning chances in Craps is to use a Craps strategy. You don’t need a strategy, but it can increase your chances of winning.

Just keep in mind that having a responsible mindset also ensures that you use your bankroll in the best possible way while staying safe.
