The Evolution of Online Slots
Slot machines are one of the most popular casino games available. Whether played in a land-based casino or an online Indian casino, you’ll discover thousands of titles in just about every theme imaginable. But have you ever stopped to wonder how it all began? Read on to learn more about the history and evolution of online slots.
The Original Slot Machine
A New York company, Sittman and Pitt, developed the very first slot machine in 1891. The game had a total of 50 playing cards on five drums. It cost a nickel to play, and the machine was a popular addition to many bars. After players inserted a coin, they would pull the level to start the game. They would get a payout for getting a poker hand on the reels. However, to increase the house odds, the jack of hearts and 10 of spades were removed.
Electricity Changes the Slot Game
The next big change to hit the slot machine came in 1964 when electricity became a mainstream amenity for most of the planet. At that point, Bally released Money Honey, the first fully electromechanical slot. While the reels operated entirely by electric power, players still started the game by pulling a lever. Although the game really didn’t need the lever, manufacturers were afraid players wouldn’t know how to operate the game without it. The game was widely popular, and eventually, the lever was removed.
The First Online Slot
In 1996, slot machine games made the transition from the physical world to the online world thanks to the release of Reel ‘Em by WMS Industries Inc. This was also the first slot game to offer a second-screen bonus round. When players triggered the bonus round,
the game took place on an entirely new screen. Not only did this bonus round increase the excitement of the game, but it also added additional payout opportunities.
From that point on, the number of slot developers and their game offerings increased each year. Currently, there are over 100 game developers with an estimated 2,000 online slot games.
Introduction of Jackpot Slots
Online slot machine games reached new heights with the introduction of jackpot slots. The first jackpot slot released online was Cash Splash by Microgaming. Although it only provided moderately high payouts, it paved the way for other exciting jackpot games with incredible prizes. One such game is Mega Moolah, which holds the world record for the largest online slot payout — a massive 17.9 million euros.
